Frequently Asked Questions
How many BTU per square foot?
The general rule is 20 BTU per square foot for standard 8-foot ceilings. Adjust up for poor insulation, heavy sun, or extra occupants.
What happens if I buy an AC that's too big?
An oversized unit short-cycles -- it cools too fast, shuts off, then restarts frequently. This wastes energy, wears out the compressor, and leaves humidity high.
What is a ton of cooling?
One ton equals 12,000 BTU/hour. Most homes use 2-5 ton central AC systems. The term comes from the cooling power of melting one ton of ice per day.
